How the mighty have fallen.
You may remember the sad tale of former MLB pitcher Curt Schilling and his video game development company 38 Studios. After some time in Massachusetts, the developer set out for greener pastures in the smallest state in the union, accepting a $75 million loan from Rhode Island taxpayers on the promise it would bring jobs to the state. Soon after the move, the company released the well received and reviewed, but not especially well-selling Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. As a result, the studio defaulted on the loan and was forced to close its doors shortly thereafter, laying off the entire staff, and eventually declared bankruptcy.
Schilling had invested close to $50 million of his own fortune in the company; all that money saved from his almost two decades long career in baseball, gone. In his words, own words, Schilling is "tapped out." As the subject of a $2.4 million dollar lawsuit and still with a family to support, Schilling has been forced to sell off most of his major possessions to pay off the debt, even the fabled bloody sock. But that's not the end of it. An estate sale is in the works for his Medfield, Massachusetts home, and it starts this weekend.
"Yes, we are pleased to announce the estate sale of the residence of Mr. Curt Schilling of the Boston Red Sox. No, the bloody sock is not for sale, but exquisite furniture, decor and other home furnishings will all be for sale. What a wonderful opportunity, and we are truly pleased to bring you this exceptional estate sale that will knock your Sox off!" reads the listing from Consign Works.
"This is a gorgeous 7 bedroom 8000 square foot home that is offering a great variety of items." Furniture like sofas, tables, and whatnot comprise the majority of the items, but some of the more unusual and notable items include a Craftsman tractor entitled "The Ice Mower," baseball glove chair, marble top pedestal sink, billiard table, pinball & arcade games, and for collectors, a Studio 38 drafting table.
Anyone interested in a bit of history will have to actually show up to get hold of the items. The address is 7 Woodridge Road, Medfield, MA, and the sale is set for this Saturday, October 12, from 8am to 4pm. A full list of items for sale and other details is available at the lister's website.
