Universal Pictures drops the first teaser trailer of the reboot of their famous franchise series 'The Mummy'. This time, the ancient mummy is not a high priest but a princess.
The teaser trailer immediately dives in straight to the action and shows a sneak peek of the "world of gods and monsters" as stated in the trailer tagline. Tom Cruise is the main protagonist of the film as Nick Morton, although no further details have been released yet about his character. The antagonist in charge for the reboot is no longer a high priest but an ancient princess, with Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Beyond) as Ahmanet.
The movie is set in modern times and focuses on a team of paramilitary archaeologists who go deep underground in the desert and accidentally awaken the evil and powerful mummy Ahmanet. It's up to the group of adventurers to send the ancient princess back to her tomb. Other stars of The Mummy reboot includes Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Annabelle Wallis (X-Men: First Class) and Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll.
The Mummy reboot is led by director/producer Alex Kurtzman and producer Chris Morgan. Kurtzman is known for writing or producing entries in the 'Mission: Impossible', 'Star Trek' and 'Transformers' series, while Morgan also writes and produces for 'The Fast and the Furious' series.
The film is Universal Studio's next step to launch their all-new universe of expanded monsters, part of their efforts to turn their monster flicks such as 'Dracula', 'Frankenstein' etc. into a series similar to an 'Avengers'-style franchise. The expanded monsters universe will include reboots of 'Van Helsing', 'Invisible Man', 'Wolf Man', 'The Creature from the Black Lagoon' and 'The Bride of Frankenstein', although not much details are available yet.
The Mummy is set to be released on June 9, 2017.
