'Star Trek: Discovery' Release Date, Cast, News & Update: Producers Announce The First Three Cast Members Of The Movie, Michelle Yeoh On The List

The CBS network has announced its first three cast members for the reboot TV series "Star Trek: Discovery." They initially announced Michelle Yeoh and now to add to the list is Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp.

Michelle Yeoh starred in the award-winning "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." She will be portraying as Captain Georgiou Starfleet captain of Starship Shenzhou in "Star Trek: Discovery."

Doug Jones is a staple name in sci-fi and fantasy movies and his appearance on "Star Trek: Discovery" will be an addition to his achievements. He is also a Guillermo Del Torro favorite. His face may not be as recognizable because he usually has prosthetics on.

He was The Pale Man & Fauno in "Pan's Labyrinth," "Abe Sapien in Hellboy 1 & 2," The Ancient One in the TV series The Strain. He will be Lt. Saru Starfleet Science Officer and a new alien species in "Star Trek: Discovery." That means that he'll be wearing prosthetics again.

Anthony Rapp from A Beautiful Mind and Rent is cast as Lt. Stamets in "Star Trek: Discovery." He will be the astromycologist, fungus expert and Starfleet Science Officer of the Starship Discovery.

Brian Fuller, creator of "Star Trek: Discovery," shared during The Television Critics Association press day last summer that the TV series will have a female lead. He added that the role would not be the captain at the beginning. There is no news on who will be chosen to take the role.

All these are good news to the Trekkies who were dismayed at the announcement last September that the release date of "Star Trek: Discovery" was pushed back five months, from January 2017 to May 2017.

CBS defended that the delay is necessary to give the "Star Trek: Discovery" team the appropriate time to execute the highest quality, premium edition of the new "Star Trek" series. They do have big shoes to fill since the first series was a cult-level classic.

The original TV series first aired 50 years ago on September 8, 1966. According to CBS networks press release that despite the new ships, new characters and new missions of the reboot series, "Star Trek: Discovery" will carry on the same ideology.

"Star Trek: Discovery" will be a 13 episode TV series that will debut on CBS and CBS All Access. This will be the first original series to air on CBS' new VOD platform.
