Warner Bros. had a nice surprise for Bat-fans from Gamescom earlier today, showing off a trailer that debuted another member of Batman's rogues gallery to make his Arkham debut as the latest assassin trying to take out the caped crusader in Batman: Arkham Origins, Garfield Lynns, better known as Firefly.
Like Copperhead, Firefly was never an assassin, though he was a gun-for-hire. A pyromaniac in the purest sense, Garfield Lynns was able to turn his obsession into a job, becoming a professional arsonist.
While he was mentioned, and had a brief cameo of sorts in Arkham Asylum, Arkham Origins will be the first time players are exposed to the firebug.
Sporting a jet-pack to give him the same aerial capabilities as his namesake, he also sports an insulated battlesuit to protect him from the object of his obsession, not to mention Bat's wonderful toys. Traditionally, he utilizes a wide array of flame spewing weaponry, ensuring that things are sure to heat up when players come up against Lynns in combat.
Given his means for taking to the skies, fighting against Firefly should be a great way for players to see Arkham Origins' new and improved Gotham City from up high, and could be a worthy competitor to Arkham City's fight against Mr. Freeze. Still, feelings of negativity are understandable, and I hope fighting Firefly won't be too similar to Big Boss's fight against The Fury in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. I suppose we'll have to wait to find out.
You can check out Firefly in the trailer below. He appears at the 47-second mark, but make sure you watch the whole thing for Bat's first encounter with a pre-commissioner James Gordon, and a nice quip from Alfred.
The game stars a younger, not as experienced Batman we've seen in past Arkham games, and has the criminal Black Mask offering a boatload of cash to whoever can kill the caped crusader. Confirmed classic characters include Penguin, Deadshot, Deathstroke, Scarecrow, Bane, Copperhead, Mad Hatter, Killer Croc, the Joker, Anarky, and others.
Batman is armed with more than just his grapnel gun and batarangs. He's actually carrying a few new toys thrown in for good measure, all to help him pummel thugs throughout a Gotham city that's almost double the size of the one seen in Arkham City.
Batman: Arkham Origins launches Oct. 25 on Windows PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U. A Vita prequel, Batman: Arkham Origins - Blackgate, is also in development by Armature Studio, set to release the same day.
