The midseason episodes in "Blindspot" Season 2 will reveal Kurt Weller's mysterious connection to Sandstorm. Series creator Martin Gero revealed that fans will know early in the second half of the season why Weller is important to the organization.
Weller could be a Sandstorm operative, if fans were to analyze Martin Gero's recent statements. The showrunner said that there is a special reason why Sandstorm protected the FBI in the midseason finale.
To recap, in "Blindspot" Season 2 Episode 9, Nas, Reade and Zapata received a covert message from Jane about Sandstorm's location. The team decided to infiltrate the organization not knowing they were set up. Shepherd bombed the building the team entered and killed several other FBI agents except for Weller's team.
Fortunately, Weller was not among the casualties, because Sandstorm purposely pulled him out of the mission. Someone faked Allison's car accident, which prompted Weller to rush to the hospital.
According to Martin Gero, Sandstorm is protecting Weller because they have a mission for him. He serves a greater purpose for the organization. Whatever this purpose is would be revealed in the midseason episodes of "Blindspot" Season 2.
"They've had their sights on Weller since he was a kid. Trying to figure out the why of that is our major lead in the opening episodes," Gero told TV Guide.
In the same interview, Gero teased that Sandstorm will have a new informant from the FBI in "Blindspot" Season 2. Now that Dr. Borden is no longer at the department, the organization would have to find a replacement. Could this be where Weller comes in? Is he a Sandstorm operative?
Likewise, Gero teased that the second half of "Blindspot" Season 2 has a surprising twist. Is he referring to Weller's secret association with Sandstorm? If this is the case, then this would explain why Weller recognized Shepherd's voice and why he has been on Sandstorm's radar since his days in the academy.
