Following the original Vive was released in April, HTC plans to fast track the development of the Vive 2 in a market currently dominated by the Oculus Rift. Despite being able to sell more than 140,000 units, HTC is keen having a bigger share of the pie.
According to TechCrunch, Rikard Steiber, the company's spokesperson, confirms rumors regarding HTC's new VR headset. In his statement, Steiber said that the new HTC Vive will focus on a new design and improved performance that the current VR headset lacks. He further added that the device is set to evolve around the innovative world of the VR industry. Noting that consumers should expect major hardware upgrade for HTC's upcoming VR device.
HTC Vive 2 Release Date, Specs & Update: Company Spokesman Denies Early Rumors
Rumors swirling around the industry have insinuated that the new device will be named as the Vive 2, but this has yet to be confirmed. According to Steiber, the exact specs, name and actual improvements to HTC's next VR headset are still unknown to him.
Tech Radar reports that HTC wants to directly compete with the Oculus Rift and vows to compete with the headset's specifications. However HTC still has not confirmed the release date for the VR headset. The company has not also specified if it will be releasing a console or a phone model. The console model sees new hardware every six years and the phone model upgrades the hardware every year.
There is, however, a strong possibility that the HTC's next VR device could go wireless. HTC and Quark VR are reported to collaborate in producing a prototype wireless headset that would come with an upgraded resolution. As of the moment, HTC has not responded on the possibility of releasing a wireless version of the VR headset for the 2017 first quarter.
