Windows 10 keeps getting better as users can stream Netflix contents in 4K resolution starting this week. However, the Netflix exclusive 4K streaming is not for all.
Netflix contents are now available to stream in 4K resolution with Windows 10 users. This can be accessed using compatible PCs and 2-in-1 devices. The collaboration of Microsoft and Netflix is a part of Netflix's strategy in sharing content to most platforms it can reach.
The Netflix 4K streaming was first announced by Windows blog editor-in-chief Mollie Ruiz-Hopper. The announcement came without Netflix confirmation about its launch on Windows 10. Ruiz-Hopper said that Netflix 4K streaming will debut with "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life" on November 25th.
According to Engadget, 4K Netflix streaming is already out for a while on streaming boxes and Smart TVs. However, it took time before Netflix was able to enter the Windows platform due to DRM limitations. Although the 4K content is available now to Windows 10 not all users can access the content since there is a requirement pre-requisite.
Windows 10 users with older computers may not enjoy the exclusive Netflix 4K streaming. 4K streaming has 10-bit HEVC codec that older Intel processors can't deliver. Windows 10 users who want to stream Netflix with 4K resolution must have a seventh generation Kaby Lake processor by Intel. This new processor is mostly not seen yet from the recently released computers.
The pre-requisite of 4K streaming only proves that this news from Microsoft may not be as exciting as it gets. Computer owners may need to ditch their old computers and purchase a new one before they can enjoy Netflix in 4K resolution even if they are using Windows 10 OS.
Meanwhile, Netflix 4K streaming is not actually a necessity for Windows 10 users. You don't need to purchase a new computer just to watch TV series on it. The idea will defeat the purpose of Smart TVs that is mainly for watching TV content.
Moreover, if you already have a subscription with Netflix on your Smart TV, you can still enjoy the very same content it will offer on PC with Windows 10 OS. The only difference is that the Ultra HD resolution that Netflix 4K streaming offer will cost you more.
