PS4 getting Warframe as launch title: What you should know

Digital Extremes' Dark Sector was used as one of the first examples of what seventh-generation gaming consoles could do visually when the original 2004 video featured a very different version and setting of what the eventual 2008 game would look like. It's then protagonist featured a full body sci-fi inspired suit in some form of space station. A full shift from the more modern feel that gave players lead protagonist Hayden Tenno and the game's signature glaive weapon.

Now The Darkness 2 and Star Trek developer are returning with an upcoming Playstation 4 launch title of Warframe, a free-to-play online cooperative multiplayer action game influenced by Dark Sector's original look.

Warframe has up to four players completing missions together while mixing third-person shooting with fluid movement and melee combat. Being a free-to-play game, Warframe  allows credits to be earned slowly or can be purchased through micro-transactions.

According to Warframe's creative director Steve Sinclair, the game gives of a feeling of Phantasy Star Online while calling it "Mass Effect meets Ninja Gaiden." Warframe has technically been since October 2012 on PC as a closed beta before going open in March though Sinclair told IGN that Sony caught wind of the title and asked them to bring the game over to its next-gen console. Digital Extreme loved the less restrictive platform of Sony's online network and that the electronics giant didn't require a publisher to get on the console.

"Sony has been incredibly supportive and available," said Sinclair. " It[Playstation 4] is awesome, and I don't want to speak disparagingly about any existing or prior platforms, but we showed Warframe for the first time to our entire studio, and everyone had their jaws on the floor, how 1080p, silky smooth and beautiful it was. So I'm really, really enjoying working on the machine."

Though information wasn't given on how the DualShock 4's touch pad will be utilized, the game will have new content on a monthly bases and will have a mobile app for Android and iOS.
