While fans are still waiting for the official release date of "Iron Man 4," whispers and speculations regarding Robert Downey Jr. not reprising his iconic role have been making its rounds on the Internet. Now, a new report claims that another Hollywood A-list actor may give RDJ a run for his money.

Mel Gibson may have not played a superhero just yet but his previous works will definitely fit him right in in the Marvel world. The "Braveheart" actor has shown interest to be a part of "Iron Man 4." Unfortunately, this may also mean that Robert Downey Jr. will have a tough contender to play Tony Stark.
However, Mel Gibson is not interested in playing the beloved genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist, or any of the "Iron Man 4" characters. The "Blood Father" star actually wants to direct the much-awaited fourth installment, as reported by Movie Web.
"It might be fun," Mel Gibson said. "You'd have to figure out a way to be different with that." This is the first link of the 60-year-old actor-turned-director to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Meanwhile, GamenGuide has previously reported that after a couple of featured appearances of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man in a series of blockbuster films, the actor is allegedly ready to hang his famous suit up. As a matter of fact, RDJ is said to be taking on "Sherlock Holmes 3" soon, pushing "Iron Man 4" off his priority list. Marvel and Robert Downey Jr. have yet to comment on this issue.
