EA says the next iteration in the Need For Speed series – Need For Speed Rivals. Rivals is currently set for a Nov. 19 release on PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PC and other current gen consoles.
Need For Speed Rivals is being developed by Ghost Games along with Criterion, and will run on the next generation Frostbite 3 engine. The game is set to focus on players racing as cops or racers, where one is looking to catch the criminals and the other looking to evade them, with both sides amassing speed points in the process.
“Racers are lone wolves out for their own glory; driving agile cars built for high speed racing and epic chases. Cops work in teams to hunt down and bust racers using the full power of the police force,” the official page states.
“Switch roles at any time and watch the stakes grow in an all-new scoring system that lets you put your speed points on the line to earn even greater rewards.”
As far as in-game objectives are concerned, the player’s goal, as a racer, is to become infamous for taking risks behind the wheel. The more cops players evade, the more Speed Points they collect, enabling them to unlock new cars and items. By raising the stakes race after race, the player will become an ever-more valuable target to the cops, but all shall be lost once busted.
Being a cop, on the other hand, players will need to work together as part of a team in pursuit of racers. Here the players will earn prominence and rise in the ranks of the Police Force with every bust. Achieving higher ranks unlocks new police-only cars and more powerful pursuit tech.
“The Need for Speed franchise has been an industry leader bringing social competition to the forefront in games,” says Marcus Nilsson, Executive Producer, Ghost Games. “For the first time, players will have the freedom to seamlessly go from single player to co-op to multiplayer. In Need for Speed Rivals we are creating one game experience with one progression, where the freedom to play with friends is more fluid and accessible than ever before.”
Rivals is also set to introduce a new feature called AllDrive, which allows players to make an easy transition from playing with friends to playing alone. And there will also be the option to customize the cars with fresh paintjobs, custom license plates, liveries, decals, rims, and performance upgrades.
