Paramount Pictures has released the full trailer of the live-adaptation of "Ghost in the Shell" starring Scarlet Johansson in a special event in Japan last Sunday. "Ghost in the Shell" is one of the most famous manga-anime stories in Japan which is set in 2070 about a cyborg woman trying to save the human race from terrorists.
"I am thrilled to have been given the opportunity to play the Major, and I am so excited to be able to show you a glimpse into her world," Johansson said in the beginning of the "Ghost in the Shell" trailer. "The Avenger" star, Johansson was also seen wearing the iconic nude colored-thermoptic suit which is called the Invisible Armor in the trailer.
The "Ghost in the Shell" Hollywood adaptation was inspired by Mamoru Oshii version which was then made as a full animation movie in 1995 and Masamune Shirow's 1989 manga version according to Daily Mail. The sneak preview that lasted 2 minutes and featured The Major or Motoko Kusanagi played by Scarlett Johansson which she encountered the "shelling" in a laboratory.
Scarlett Johansson's The Major is in honor of the 1995 animated film "Ghost in the Shell". The Major will be leading an anti-terrorist organization called Section 9 trying to accomplish in stopping an evil hacker named the Puppet Master.
"Ghost in the Shell" garnered controversies over the casting of Scarlett Johansson as The Major. Variety reports that the fans of the anime film had protested against the whitewashing of the character of The Major when she is supposed to be a Japanese woman.
Other Asian Hollywood actors also disapproved the whitewashing of the Japanese character. "Nothing Against Scarlet Johansson, In fact I'm a big fan. But everything against this whitewashing this Asian role," Ming-Na Wen of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." tweeted after Johansson was confirmed for the role.
"Ghost in the Shell" will be released in the theaters on March 31, 2017. The film is directed by Rupert Sanders and also stars Juliette Binoche, Michael Pitt and Takeshi Kitano.
