While this news may possibly upset many fans of the cave people, it has been confirmed that "The Croods" sequel will never get the chance to see the light of the day. Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley made an announcement at the DWA Glendale headquarters that DreamWorks Animation has ended the production for the sequel of "The Croods" on Thursday.
Dream Works hopes to keep the 30 film crew members that will be affected following the cancellation of this film. Someone from the production company said that some of these crew members might be sent to other film projects while others might undergo some artistic development.
In 2013, DreamWorks Animation had begun developing a sequel to "The Croods" after the film received generally positive reviews from critics. The adventure-comedy masterpiece of DreamWorks Animation became a hit in 2013 earning $587.2 million worldwide. Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco, who wrote and directed the film, were ready to play the same duties on the highly anticipated "The Croods" sequel.
In 2014, the sequel for the "The Croods" was announced which was scheduled to be released early November in 2017. Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds and Emma Stone were completely set to reprise their voice roles in the prehistoric-themed animation. Kat Dennings and Leslie Mann were also added to the voice cast. However, Dream Works Animation changed its mind and announced that "The Croods" sequel will be released a month after the first planned release.
Earlier in August of this year, "The Croods" sequel had been moved again from its second scheduled release date which was set in December 2017. Sometime after the adjustment in the schedule was made, Dream Works Animation hired the screenwriters Kevin and Dan Hageman, the brothers behind the story for Warner Bros' blockbuster "The Lego Movie" to rewrite the script of "The Croods" sequel.
Still, Dream Works Animation made an announcement that the production of "The Croods" sequel was scratched off. Variety says that the decision had been made even before Comcast-NBCUniversal acquired its ownership of the DreamWorks Animation.
