After Steam achievements leaked for Final Fantasy 8 back in March, gamers were curious what was going on with the fan favorite of the FF franchise (try saying that five times fast), especially as the game still has yet to appear on the distribution service. Japanese magazine Famitsu has since declared that the game is indeed on the way.
Well not as adored by the fans as its predecessor, the game set a record for the franchise, earning more than $50 million from sales in the United States 13 weeks after being released, making it the fastest selling Final Fantasy title at the time. Additionally, it was voted the 22nd-best game of all time by readers of Famitsu.
Final Fantasy 8 featured a number of firsts for the series:
- first to have realistically proportioned characters
- first to feature a vocal piece as its theme music, and
- first and only titles to deviate from the series' traditional means of leveling via experience
Despite Square Enix not confirming the game's re-release, it's seen as likely, as the company did release a remastered version of Final Fantasy 7 recently with all the fixings - game boosters, achievements, compatability, etc. With the achievement leak, the re-releasedFinal Fantasy 8 is expected to have the same features.
