EA Confirms Frostbite Go: What’s It All About?

Frostbite Go, the re-worked game engine of Frostbite 3 that was created for the mobile platforms like iOS and Android, has been finally confirmed by EA.

EA revealed the information via the History section in its official Frostbite site. “One of our most exciting current projects is called Frostbite Go, a mobile division empowering EA game developers with Frostbite’s proven excellent workflows and features to bring true Frostbite experiences to all major mobile platforms,” the company writes.

Although the page doesn’t say which version of Frostbite the mobile engine will be based on, but it’s most likely Frostbite 3, given that the current game engine will be powering many EA games in the future including the upcoming Battlefield 4. The news should be particularly galling to Nintendo since EA recently said they will not be bringing Frostbite 3 to the Wii U. EA can make a version for smartphones but not for the WiiU? The earlier version of the engine – Frostbite 2 – boasted titles such as Battlefield 3, Medal of Honor: Warfighter and Need For Speed: The Run.

“Runtime in Frostbite supports a highly scalable model in order to appeal to the diverse array of platforms available on today’s market. Efficiency in both our runtime memory and runtime performance are both key factors to enabling code and data systems to deploy content to diverse targets from XBOX360 and PlayStation 4 to iOS and Android,” the publisher further explains.

Battlefield 4 is currently set to be the first game from EA that will make use of Frostbite 3 and will be arriving later this year in October for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC. Release on next-gen consoles is also on the cards.
