Fans of author Neil Gaiman's controversial novel "American Gods," are excited about finally seeing a smallscreen adaptation of the adventures of Shadow Moon and Mr. Wednesday. But recent reports have shown that the character of Mr. Wednesday could have been given to actor Nicolas Cage.
Recently picked-up by the Starz Network, "American Gods" will have a 2017 release date, with actors Ricky Whittle and Ian McShane portraying the role Shadow Moon and Mr. Wednesday repectively. But that wasn't always the case. As with the footage that has been released, and with the well-received 2016 San Diego Comic Con trailer, things seem to be looking quite excellent.
"American Gods" seems to be shaping up into a brilliant television experience, but as it turns out, Bleeding Cool reports that Nicholas Cage could have played the role of Mr. Wednesday. When he was asked for his reason of now making the transition to television like a lot of Hollywood actors have recently been doing, Cage said he was approached but said no to the TV adaptation of the hit Neil Gaiman novel.
Cage added that he was also handed the script and was impressed at how brilliantly it was written, but stated that he and William Friedkin have been talking about different things. He also said that he will be highly-likely to do television in the future, but he feels that he is just a bit stubborn to make the transition at the moment, which was the reason he declined to play the important "American Gods" role.
According to Screen Crush, Nicolas Cage is also well-aware that a move to television would be a huge positive for his career globally, but the thought of being stuck in one city for months on end playing a role would make him feel trapped, and that the feeling is not inviting to him.
The academy award-winning actor admits that he is a bit of a snob for holding on and staying in movies, but does not dismiss the chance to joing a television show in the future.
Cage also gives respect to Ian McShane being instead, and he has full confidence that McShane will do very well as a cast of "American Gods". Fans will have to remain wondering what an unhinge version of Mr. Wednesday played by Nicholas Cage could have been like. Meanwhile, Cage's latest movie "Army of One" was release on Nov. 4.
