The news about Donald Trump's victory may still come as a shock to most of the world, as the Republican swept more than the 270 electoral votes needed to take the White House. But before his stunning upset, his campaign had been met with much resistance, perhaps most strikingly and notably by political commentators like Stephen Colbert, Samantha Bee and Seth Meyers.
But, one comedian in particular had been arguably the most vocally disparaging of a Donald Trump bid to the White House even before he even ran--and it turns out, he may be to blame for his candidacy. That man is John Oliver of "Last Week Tonight."
What happened before
John Oliver, who currently hosts HBO's "Last Week Tonight," is known for his firebrand commentary, particularly against Donald J. Trump. He's devoted a large number of segments calling out the Republican for his bigotry, racial slurs, homophobic statements, and overall lack of cohesive policies.
Of all his anti-Trump sentiments, John Oliver is perhaps most known for his "Drumpf" movement, where his show revealed that Donald J. Trump's real family name was actually Drumpf. But it turns out, however, John Oliver may have been responsible for Donald J. Trump's run for presidency in the first place.
How John Oliver was responsible for Trump's presidency
As it turns out, John Oliver had actually urged Donald Trump to run for presidency. Back in 2013, when he was still a fill-in host for "The Daily Show," John Oliver had jokingly egged on the then business mogul to run for the presidency, even promising him a check if he chose to run.
Fast forward three years later, John Oliver apologized to the American people for having inadvertently made Donald Trump president. In his defense, he said, there is no defense--but he had hoped that the strong moral compass of the people would have hurdled a potential Trump presidency.
Well, he was proven wrong--and greatly. Will there be payback for John Oliver's jokes at the expense of the 45th President of the United States? Stay tuned for more updates.
