The 90's was a weird time for games, and nothing exemplified that better than Nintendo's Virtual Boy. If you were born after '95, then this failure of a console experiment came and went before you could grasp a controller, something you should be extremely grateful for. However, should you want to try this abortion of a "portable" game console, you're in luck. An Virtual Boy emulator, VBijn-Ovr, is now available for the Oculus Rift, ready for whenever the headset hits store shelves.
The first question that may rattle in your brain pan upon reading this news is likely the same as millions of others: Why? Good question. Older gamers may remember that among the many issues with the console, apart from a lackluster 3D effect and high price, also included dizziness, headaches, and nausea. At best, the emulator helps illustrate the long and difficult journey 3D gaming has made before finally considered a possibility with the Occulus Rift. At worst, well, it's the Virtual Boy. Doesn't really get much worse than that.
Don't count on the emulator extending your Rift experience by much. A paltry 22 games were ever made for the Virtual Boy, and only 14 of them made it over to the North American market.
Admittedly, it's a nice option, but the Virtual Boy is the Freddy Krueger of videogames. Anything that helps remind gamers of such a horriffic entity is ultimately not a good idea, and best left forgotten. Take the nerd's word for it.
