Season 3 for “True Detective” has been confirmed to happen in HBO amid concerns that it will no longer be returning. According to HBO programming head Casey Bloys, it is a really valuable franchise for the cable channel. He emphasized that considering the first two seasons of the series had an average of 11 million viewers per episode, they are not about to kill the series.
“True Detective” which was created by Nic Pizzolato, is an anthology crime drama which was intended to have a different self contained narrative every season. It has new cast ensembles of different sets of characters and settings. It originally premiered in 2014 to high ratings.
The first season of “True Detective” aside from being a commercial success was also received with wide acclaim by critics. The same cannot be said for Season 2 however. A significant drop in the ratings happened. Fans of the show also complained of many loopholes in the storyline.
“True Detective” Season 3 is being touted by fans as the time of revival for the franchise. Fans also hope that the same team from Season 1 will be brought back. But, it was recently announced that Cary Fukunaga will not be coming back to take charge of the directing when the series returns.
Fukunaga mentioned in Business Standard that he signed on for the series for one season only. He added that he wanted to experiment in the format and genre of “True Detective” and said that now that he has, he does not expect to return to the show anytime soon.
But, rumors persist that the negative reviews and poor ratings of “True Detective” Season 2 are the reasons why the director chose not to return to the series. To date, nothing has been revealed about the cast and staff of the new season yet.
Former HBO programming president Michael Lombardo takes the blame for the failure of “True Detective” Season 2. He admitted that for one, he asked Pizzolatto to write the entire season in a very short time frame reports The Wrap.
According to Bloys, Pizzolatto still has no idea what “True Detective” Season 3 will be about since his is busy with his other projects. Bloys said that he does not discount the possibility that someone new will write for the new season under the supervision of Pizzolatto. The series will likely come out by 2018.
