James Gunn Supports Women In Hollywood

"Guardians of the Galaxy" 2 director James Gunn took a moment to express is thoughts on Facebook during the International Day of the Girl. He noted the difference between stories and characters written for men and women, Polygon reported.

He pointed out that the film industry mostly creates one-dimensional roles for women, often in a supporting role for the male characters. He provided an example of Michael Corleone of "The Godfather, Marty McFly of "Back to the Future" and Han Solo of "Star Wars." He said that these characters are allowed to be flawed while the female ones have to be flawlessly perfect.

"I am sick of stories where there are a bunch of fully realized male characters and one female character, whose primary characteristic is simply being 'the girl' or the personality-less object of some man's affections," Gunn wrote. The "Guardians of the Galaxy" 2 director added that female characters are often unrealistic compared to their male counterparts. He admitted to having varying degrees of success in writing female roles however, he makes sure that he constantly do better.

'Guardians Of The Galaxy' 2 Will Treat Female Differently?

What James Gunn was talking about is easily seen in Marvel Cinematic Universe's films, CinemaBlend noted. In eight years and resulting 12 films, the media franchise was only able to feature films with male titular characters.

Although MCU is trying to change things in Phase Three, there are still a lot of things to work on. It should be noted though that this problem has been an issue for as long as the movie industry started.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" 2 director promises that his film will pass the Bechdel Test. This test was created by cartoonist and writer Alison Bechdel stating that a movie should include at least two women, who interact with each other about topics not involving men.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" 2 is going to star three strong female characters. "Guardians of the Galaxy" 2 is expected to hit the theaters on July 28, 2017.
