Miyamoto on Wii U Technology, 'Pikmin 3' Delay

Miyamoto's been doing a lot of talking lately, more than usual, and Monday sees an addition to the slow rollout of carefully worded comments from Nintendo's lead game designer.

In an interview with Time, Miyamoto addressed the big gaping hole in the Wii U's current lineup, "Pikmin 3," a game that should have hit shelves alongside the console.

"I think ideally it would have been nice if we'd been able to release "Pikmin 3" closer to launch, but the Wii U - though it shares the Wii name - is obviously a brand new system, with new chips and graphical capabilities," he said. 'Pikmin 3' is meant to take full advantage of the new hardware, even though the title has been in development for quite a long time. Aside from the technical upgrades, Miyamoto told Gamespot he feels showing the map on the Wii U's gamepad should add a lot of efficiency to the real-time strategy title.

But when it comes to console power, the Wii U's and future consoles, Miyamoto follows a similar logic to NIntendo's long-time strategy.

"So for this current generation of hardware, our belief is that Wii U is going to offer the most stable and consistent environment to which developers can bring their ideas. In the long term, and I mean very long term technology changes and advances, it's possible that we'll see technological advancement that from a hardware standpoint make other possibilities a reality, but certainly in the shorter term, we feel that Wii U is not only the best but also the most suitable device for the living room," Time reports.

With the recent PS4 reveal and the slew of Microsoft's next Xbox rumours, it's clear the Wii U is going to live and die on innovations away from the spec race. Ironically, Nintendo's focus on the 3DS's 3D capabilities may be fleeting as of late.
