If you were one among the many nostalgic "Resident Evil" fans who went out and bought a copy of "Resident Evil HD," then Capcom thanks you a lot. The remastered "Resident Evil" rereleases—"Resident Evil 4," "Resident Evil 5," and "Resident Evil 6"—for Playstation 4 and Xbox One have totaled to more than 1.5 million copies sold, and that's a big deal in this day and age.
The company put out a tweet on its official Twitter account thanking fans for their patronage, especially on the 20th anniversary of the "Resident Evil" franchise. Although current-gen remasters of games from two and even one generation ago make up for one of the biggest trends in the video game industry right now, those numbers for "Resident Evil HD" are pretty staggering. Yes, the rereleases cost cheaper than new releases at $20, but they're a testament to how gamers view the popular franchise, and prove that remasters are a good way to cash in on nostalgia.
Aside from "Resident Evil 4," "Resident Evil 5," and "Resident Evil 6," Capcom has also remastered and rereleased "Resident Evil 1" and "Resident Evil Type 0," as well as "Dead Rising 1" and "Dead Rising 2" while we're talking about games in the same genre. At this point, it seems like the only thing they have yet to make is "Resident Evil 3," as they're already apparently working on a remastered "Resident Evil 2."
In other news, aside from "Resident Evil HD" moving a lot of copies this year, Blizzard has also announced that "Overwatch" has broken a record. Polygon reports that the popular massively multiplayer online first-person shooter now has at least 20 million players on Battle.net, and while that doesn't immediately translate to just as many purchases of the game, that's still a staggering success for the company. It looks like traditional video gaming isn't dying just yet.
