Fans of the science fiction first-person shooter game, "Half Life" would be glad to know that the franchise is looking to delve into VR. In fact, a nice surprise was found within the Valve News Network's virtual reality app called "Destinations," indicating that the game is already in development.
According to VG24/7, the latest "Destinations" update, which was released late last month, contained code that referred to "HL:VR," with details on weapons and VR controller movement among other features. While there has been no official announcement from Valve, it seems like there is hope for "Half Life VR" fans to see the game come to fruition.
The "HL:VR" code is rumored to be remnants of the studio's experimentation with VR for "Half Life" but some believe otherwise. This is mostly because the leaked code replaced old code in "Destinations," which means this leaked code may be relatively new. Moreover, one of the "HL:VR"-related codes indicates that it is used "to force the HL:VR to speak." This is meaningful because "Half Life" and possibly "Half Life VR" protagonist Gordon Freeman does not speak at all.
Gamerant reports that Valve programmer Jeep Barnett wasn't shy about admitting that they would love to work on VR versions of their franchises, including "Half Life." Valve writer Chet Faliszek admitted that "Half Life 3" will notbe supporting VR, but that doesn't mean another iteration will arrive in the form of "Half Life VR."
"Half Life" was released back in 1998 for PlayStation 2, OS X, and Windows PC. In 2004, a sequel called "Half Life 2" arrived. "Half Life" has sold over 9.3 million copies in December 2008 just a month after its release.
