Sony's next-gen system will cost £300 ($465), about £100 cheaper than when the PlayStation 3's launch-day price, according to leaked "internal documents" obtained by The Times of London. (full article only available to subscribers)
When the PlayStation 3 first debuted in 2007, the 20 GB model and a 60 GB models were priced at $499 (€499) and $599 (€599), respectively. The PS3's high price tag is widely considered a major factor in the console's initially slow adoption rate.
The smaller price tag will hopefully keep the PS4 competitive with the next Xbox, which is expected to launch later this year. This price fits roughly within the range mentioned previously. Earlier this month, Japanese news service Asahi reported that the system would cost at least $400, pegging the exact cost at around $425 in Japan, where prices are traditionally a little higher than those in the US.
Another rumor reported by Asahi and Japanese news service Nikkei, a description of the next PlayStation controller, seems to have been proven fruitful by a set of photos leaked last week.
With only two days to go before their big announcement, Sony has not commented on the supposed price tag. We'll find out everything when the company makes their presentation this Wednesday.
