A confusing image from the head of Just Cause series developer Avalanche could be our first look at the next game in the franchise.
The blurry screenshot of what looks like a man kicking another man off a truck was tweeted last night by Avalanche founder Christopher Sundberg, with this message:
"We're making awesome games at #avalanchestudios! This year will be awesome! #yearoftheavalanche."
Avalanche is currently working on three games, including a game based on the upcoming Mad Max sequel, Fury Road and something called "Project Mamba," a game rumored to be the next Just Cause in development for next-gen consoles. "Project Mamba" is being developed by a New York-based team put together especially for this game.
Of course, there are three Avalanche projects. Mad Max is set in the desert, so the image could potentially be from that. It could also be the third game, which Kotaku says is also based on a licensed game. Here's the clincher: Look at the kicker's left hand, that kind of looks like it could be a grappling hook. Wait a second... The Just Cause series' primary mechanic is a grappling hook!
Assuming this is Just Cause 3, than two things are clear:
1) Just Cause 3 is definitely being designed for next-gen consoles. (That's not a surprise.)
2) Just Cause 3 will dump it's traditional jungle setting for a desert.
Then again, maybe the game is so big it has a desert and a jungle. And considering how blurry the screen is, it's pretty hard to tell what the game will actually look like...
Ok, so nothing is clear. It does sound like we're going to hear more from Avalanche and possibly Just Cause 3 in 2013.
