Bungie to Unveil "Destiny" Franchise February 17th

Former Halo developer Bungie has announced plans to reveal the first entry in their upcoming franchise, Destiny, February 17th on the game's new Facebook page.

The announcement is likely a correction, coming shortly after a teaser site popped up earlier today featuring an alternate reality game (ARG) pointing to a reveal on Monday, February 18th. Since the announcement, Bungie has created a new Destiny forum on their site, as well as dedicated Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ pages.

The Destiny series, to be published by Activision, will span four games over the next ten years. According to court documents brought to light last year during Activision's legal dispute with former Infinity Ward leads Jason West and Vince Zampella, the first game in the series will be released on Xbox 360, PS3 and the next Xbox. The three sequels will be released on all next-gen console and PC.

Described as a "sci-fi, action shooter," a set of leaked concept art and plot overview, confirmed genuine by Bungie, reveal a basic overview  setting the stage for the franchise. Here's a short, paraphrased summary of the Destiny's setting:

Hundreds of years in the future, a massive alien ship, which humans call "the traveller," orbits the Earth, protecting the last human city for reasons unknown. Despite their help, hostile aliens still attack the planet, and a group of "knights," including the protagonist, defend the last of the human race from hostile invaders.

The information, likely from an advertising or marketing source, also compares the franchise to Star Wars, describing the series as "accessible" and "fun for all." According to a Gamespot report, the game is also "quite like Halo."
