Launching only last month, it looks as though the NeoGeo Gold X is already on its last licks. Siliconera is reporting that production on the handheld as officially come to a close.
When it was first announced over the summer, it was advertised as THE NeoGeo experience, coming with 20 games pre-loaded, the ability to plug in the handheld directly into your TV, and an arcade joystick. However, it seems as though the device fell the same way of its forefathers into a fairly niche audience. While initially cheaper than both the 3DS and PS Vita on their respective launch dates, it's hefty price tag $200 was, and still is a lot to ask for from games that had their time in the sun 20 plus years ago.
While it might not herald a death rattle, it's certainly not a good sign for the company. Despite the news that production of the system has stopped, both SNK and Tommo are still planning on going forward with making games for the device.
If you're a diehard fan of the company, better skedaddle your way off to Best Buy, or GameStop and grab yourself one while you still can, because I can't imagine it will be on store shelves in the future. Below is the list of 20 games the handheld comes pre-loaded with.
