Capcom Porting Old School Arcade Games to PSN and XBLA

Speaking with Famitsu magazine, Capcom revealed a plan to release a wide array of old arcade classics for download to celebrate the company's upcoming 30th anniversary.

Capcom Arcade Cabinet: Retro Game Collection will release as a series for both the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade. They'll pre-dominantly focus on Capcom's big hits from the 80's.

"I can't go into details on titles yet," producer Kenji Kataoka told the magazine, "but we're definitely focusing on the games that came out earlier on in our history. These are completely faithful reproductions, too. You used to have arcade games ported to the NES and such and wind up being completely different titles on that platform, but that's not the case here. Even if there were bugs in the original, we've kept them in there if we felt we needed to in order to retain the original feel of the game."

A full list hasn't been released yet, but Capcom has officially announced 1987's Black Tiger, a Ghouls n' Goblins styled side scroller that has since been seen in Capcom Classics Collection: Remixed for PSP, and Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 2 for both PS2 and Xbox, as well as the Wii's Virtual Console in 2011. Capcom also hinted at a few other games to be part of the collection, such as 1942, Commando, Trojan, and Gun.Smoke

Capcom hopes to bring in new audiences for their old school games by scaling back on the difficulty. The games will feature adjustments so new players won't be discouraged by the older games traditionally challenging gameplay. Said Katoaka, "For example, you can adjust the strength of your attacks, the range of collision detection, and so forth. This allows you to engage in training, and we've got support for turbo buttons and arcade sticks as well. I was able to use these functions to reach the ending on pretty much all of the games [we have planned], so they're great for people who were annoyed they couldn't beat them back then. For people [who don't want changes], it's set up so all additional functions can be turned on and off."

No release date has been mentioned, but seeing as how it's meant to celebrate Capcom's 30th Anniversary, June seems a god candidate. Capcom will give the full lineup of ported games on Feb. 7.
