The first trailer for the final chapter in Final Fantasy 13's Lightning trilogy made its debut today.
Starts off on a nice, chipper note, huh?
Not unlike our current real life perdicament as brought to you by the Mayans, players are given 13 days in which to save the world. Each day is the equivalant of about 2 hours in real world time. Now, since it's pretty easy to lose yourself in a final Fantasy game, and spend well over 50 to 60 hours or more on most titles, 26 hours sounds like a preposterous amount of time to save the world.
However, worry not, because players can add time to their quest depending on the decisions they make in game. On the flip side, decisions can also shorten the clock as well. Square Enix has previously hinted that even making the "right" decision can have disastrous consequences.
Now, with all these decisions affecting the gameplay time, and no doubt the story, can gamers expect multiple endings? Bingo. Square has intended for players to make multiple playthroughs on the game in order to see all that it has to offer.
Treasure that time though, because this will be the last outing for not only Lightning, but all the rest of 13's characters as well. In a interview this past fall with IGN, director Motomu Toriyama confirmed this information, saying via translator, "“The ‘Lightning Saga’ that began with Final Fantasy XIII -- in other words, the characters and universe that revolve around Lightning -- will come to an end with this installment. I’m sure that Lightning and the people around her will all have a happy ending. Please look forward to the final episode worthy to be called the denouement of the ‘Lightning Saga.’”
It hasn't yet been announced what sort of calamity Lightning will have to face to save the world from it's end, only that she learns of the fact after waking in Novus Partus, a world born form the merger of Gran Pulse and Valhalla. Despite that she's spent several centuries in stasis, Toriyama said "Other main characters will more than likely make an appearance in many different ways," he said.
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 is expected to debut on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sometime next year.
