The controversial historic film "The Lost City of Z" lands at Amazon Studios, taking North American rights. The hotly contested film stars Charlie Hunnam alongside Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson and Sienna Miller. The acquisition was pegged at mid-eight figures.
'The Lost City Of Z' Rights
Charlie Hunnam starrer "The Lost City of Z" was acquired by online streaming giant Amazon, closing a deal with Bleecker Street to release the film. The deal reportedly cost a mid-eight-figure amount according to sources of Hollywood Reporter. The film was helmed by James Gray and is slated to hit the theaters in spring 2017. Amazon is still wrapping up the rollout plans with Andrew Karpen of Bleecker Street. Bob Berney of Amazon is supervising the marketing and distribution of "The Lost City of Z."
"The Lost City of Z" is based on David Grann's best-selling book with the same title. Originally, the film was set up at Paramount, where Brad Pitt had rights to first look. However, the studio kept on putting off production, which prompted James Gray to take back the rights. Gray eventually arranged independent financing from MICA Entertainment.
Charlie Hunnam Takes The Lead
Charlie Hunnam isn't the first choice to take the lead role in "The Lost City of Z." According to the report, Brad Pitt was supposed to lead in the true-to-life drama film. The film is set in 1925 with Hunnam playing as the British explorer Col. Percival Fawcett. The story centers on the British explorer as he explores the Amazon, getting lost while finding a mysterious city. Benedict Cumberbatch was also tapped to star, however, he refused the role because of Marvel's "Doctor Strange."
"The Lost City of Z" will premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 15, 2017. The film is produced by Brad Pitt's Plan B alongside Mica Entertainment. Check out the official trailer below.
