Minecraft Raises Over $770,000 for Charity, 3D Rendered Items Set to Replace Sprites

It was revealed in a tweet today by Minecraft developer 4J Studios that the "Halloween Skin Pack," an October release for Minecraft on Xbox 360, "brought in a total of $770,448 for the charities."

Proceeds from the pack sale were split between Block by Block, Child's Play, SANDS Lothians, and Macmillan Cancer Support charities.

The packs offered a total of 55 individual skins designed by studios like Rare and Twisted Pixel, all so Minecrafters could get in the Halloween spirt. Over 380,000 players brought the pack.

The next update for Minecraft on Xbox 360, "Title Update 7," promises to bring in more additions, to make it even more similar to its PC counterpart. You can read all about the update here.

As for Minecraft on PC, developer Nathan Adams tweeted that fully rendered diamonds are coming to Minecraft. While this may not sound like much, it does pave the way for other items to be rendered in 3D as well, instead of flat sprites.

It's arguable whether this would ruin some of Minecraft's low-graphic "charm," progress is progress.

Like the 360 version, Minecraft on PC is also set for an update. Titled "the Redstone Update," (Mojang truly has a creative way with words) the update will include an wide array of improvements to the titular ore, and its behavior. There is also said to be improvements to minecarts as well.

Minecraft's lead designer and developer Jens Bergensten made the announcement at this year's MineCon, held in Disneyland Paris.
