Cam Newton threw a 19 yard touchdown pass to Steve Smith with 1:47 left in the fourth quarter as the Carolina Panthers won their third game of the season with a 31-28 comeback win over the Philadelphia Eagles on ESPN's "Monday Night Football."
Newton threw for 251 yards, ran for 57, and looked like his former rookie of the year self as he rushed for a two touchdowns and threw for another. Carolina's DeAngelo Williams carried the ball 17 times for 85 yard and a touchdown.
Newton started the game connecting on his first five passes for 53 yards, before he broke a would-be tackle and rushed right down the middle of the field for a 22-yards touchdown run.
The Eagles responded right back by marching down the field 65 yards for a touchdown. Third-round rookie quarterback Nick Foles started his second game for Philadelphia replacing the injured Michael Vick. He was aided by strong running game sparked by Rice Brown, who had a 30-yard run on the drive and scored a rushing touchdown.
Foles completed 22 of 39 passes for 245 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Brown, who replaced the injured LeSean McCoy, finished the game with 116 yards rushing and scored on runs of 12, 1 and 9 yards.
The Eagles took a 21-17 point lead into the locker room at the end of the first half, but Carolina rallied to take the lead in the third quarter and Philadelphia did not score again in till mid-way through the fourth quarter giving them a 28-24 lead over the Panthers.
After an ill advised kickoff return deep in Carolina territory, Newton began the 86 yard drive that resulted in the game winning touchdown grab by Steven Smith. On the drive Newton was nearly perfect as he completed seven of nine passes for 68 yards including the 19-yard touchdown pass to Smith.
The Panthers improved to 3-8 on the season, while the Eagles drop to last place in their division with the same 3-8 record.
