Robert Griffin III scrambled to the right, broke two tackles and went 27-yards down the field for the go-ahead touchdown with only 33 seconds remaining in the game to defeat the Dallas Cowboys 28-23 on Thanksgiving Thursday.
The Redskins appeared to be on their way to an easy victory at halftime, leading the 14-6, but in third quarter the game became a closely contested battle.
The Cowboys managed only two field goals for the first 40 minutes of the game and were down 21-6 late in the third quarter, when DeMarcus Ware blindsided Griffin and stripped the ball from the rookie quarterback's hand. The ball was scooped up Dallas' rookie cornerback Morris Claiborne, who took the ball into the endzone.
With the game now 21-13, Dallas started to shutdown the Redskins' offensive and created the second turnover of the game when cornerback Brandon Carr picked off a Griffin pass and returned the ball to Washington's 27-yard line.
On the very next play Cowboys' quarterback connected with Dez Byrant for a touchdown to make it 21-20 going into the fourth quarter. Romo was harassed all game and sacked three times. He finished the game going 29-of-42 passing for 323 yards with the touchdown to Bryant, who had another big day with 9 catches for 109 yards.
The fourth quarter was a defensive slugfest with each team punting the ball three times. But Dallas got a big punt return late in the fourth quarter by Bryant and the team was able to get into Redskins' territory. The drive ended with a Cowboys' score. Dallas took a two-point lead on a Dan Bailey field goal with just under two minutes remaining in the game and was attempting to complete a 15-point comeback.
But Griffin shined on the ensuing drive completing six-for-six on passes and rushing for the game-winning touchdown. He was 17 of 21 for 199 yards with two touchdowns and he added 75 rushing yards for Washington, but he was sacked four times and turned over the ball twice with one interception and one fumble.
