The first peek at Brad Pitt's "World War Z" has busted out across the internet, and if the trailer is any indication, looks to be a far cry from the Max Brooks book. Check it out below!
WARNING: Book spoilers follow.
As readers know, originally, "World War Z" was written as a collection of fictionalized interviews from people who experienced the Zombie War first hand, which would've allowed for the movie to had an enormous cast, and tremendous possibilities for a wide range of scenes.
However, as indicated by the above trailer, the movie seems to be based on the interviewer's (played by Brad Pitt) experience, a dramatic shift from the source material, relegating the movie to nothing more than another disaster flick. Even the zombies, set in the novel as Romero styled slow moving shamblers showing little to no coordination and intelligence, resemble nothing more than a wave of CGI humanoids tumbling over each other. Looks as though the fast zombie vs slow zombies debate is about to be ignited again.
"World War Z" was Max Brook's fictional follow up to his "Zombie Survival Guide." Both were featured on the New York Times Best Seller list.
Brooks did a considerable amount of research in writing the book, saying, "Everything in World War Z (as in The Zombie Survival Guide) is based in reality... well, except the zombies. But seriously, everything else in the book is either taken from reality or 100% real. The technology, politics, economics, culture, military tactics... it was a LOT of homework." Major events that take place over the course of the war mentioned in the book include (MAJOR SPOILERS): the destruction of Pakistan and India in a nuclear war, Tibet becoming sovereign from China, Russia becoming a religious theocracy, the collapse of China's Three Gorges dam, and Cuba playing host to the world's most thriving economy. I suppose when people rise from the dead, things have a way of getting a little crazy. Go figure...
"World War Z" is set to open this summer, June 20, 2013.
