Mortal Kombat Movie Release Date: Warner Bros Confirms New Mortal Kombat Film

Warner Bros. revealed that The "Mortal Kombat" movie reboot has already begun moving forward with the director of "Mortal Kombat: Legacy," a web series that debuted on YouTube in April of 2011.

According to a Report by IGN via Worst Previews, Warner Bros. executive Lance Sloan has confirmed that the film is being developed and the film's potential budget.

"We're preparing right now for the film with Kevin Tancharoen, [who] directed the digital series for us," said Sloan. "He's at the helm of the forty, fifty million dollar film."

In 2010, Tancharoen gained the attention of the studio and the MK fanbase with his eight-minute long "Mortal Kombat" film, called "Mortal Kombat: Rebirth," The short starred Michael Jai White as Jax, Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade, Matt Mullins as Johnny Cage, Ian Anthony Dale as Scorpion and Lateef Crowder as Baraka. The film was a much darker take on the video game series than the original Mortal Kombat film that was released in 1995 and was directed by Paul W. S. Anderson.

Warner Premiere later ordered a 10-episode web series based on the short titled "Mortal Kombat: Legacy." In September of last year, New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. announced that Kevin Tancharoen would direct a new big-screen adaptation of Mortal Kombat from a screenplay written by Oren Uziel, who wrote "Mortal Kombat: Rebirth."

According to Worst Previews, "the reboot is rumored to follow a lowly unlucky supermarket employee who discovers that he has "out of this world" powers and must decide between good and evil, even though the evil side has helped him discover his true potential and who he really is."

In 2011, an article on Comingsoon.net said that the reboot had a tentative release date for sometime in 2013 with filming supposedly beginning earlier this year. But as of now no release date has been announced by the studio.

"It's very exciting! I'm so happy that I've been a gigantic fan of this title since I was a little kid," Tancharoen told ComingSoon. "This is a dream come true for me. I'm really happy that New Line and Warner Bros. saw the potential after the "Mortal Kombat: Legacy" webseries we did and the numbers that the videogame has done. I'm extremely grateful because it's been a big, big journey for me."
