PlayStation 4 And Xbox 720 Rumors: Will Sony's New Console Abandon The PlayStation Moniker?

The PlayStation 4 development is currently being distributed to video game developers with a final version slated for next year, according to a report by VG247.

The video game website was reportedly told by multiple anonymous sources that new versions of the Orbis kit are shipping to developers and feature Blu-ray support. According to the report, the Orbis kits are housed in in a normal PC cases.

VG247 writes: "Some US developers attended a "disclosure meeting" at Sony's offices this week, with a further meeting to take place in the coming weeks. The purpose of the meeting is for Sony to tell studios what the machine is designed to do, to detail hardware and to show a set of presentations."

The report says that the "ultimate goal" for the AMD A10 derivative hardware is "for it to be able to run 1080p and 60 frames in 3D with "no problem," to create a machine that's powerful enough for 'today and tomorrow's market.'" The dev kits apparently come with either 8GB or 16GB of RAM, 256GB hard drive as the standard, Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity and HDMI out slots.

Another interesting thing said in the report was that VG247's sources are saying that Sony is only calling the machine Orbis, and is not using the widely expected PlayStation 4 title for the new system.

No details were given about the systems game controller, but the report did say that the User Interface will be different and will allow gamers to purchase downloadable content in game. The new system will likely be announced at an event before this next year's E3 Electronics Expo.

What do you think about the possibility of Sony's next home console not being part of the PlayStation brand? What do you think the system should be called?  Comment in the section below...
