RoboCop Release Date Pushed Back (Watch First look Here)

Sony has moved the release date of Brazilian director Jose Padilha's remake of the cult classic "RoboCop" from Aug. 9, 2013 to February 7, 2014, where it compete against the recently announced DreamWorks' adaptation of the EA video game Need for Speed, according to a report by AceShowBiz.com and other websites.

Neill Blomkamp's new sci-fi film, "Elysium," starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster has been moved back to fill opening day spot of "RoboCop." Sony did not give a reason for the date change.

"The Killing's" Joel Kinnaman stars as Alex Murphy, the police officer, who is slain and becomes the titular cyborg in the reboot. The reboot was written by Joshua Zetumer, Nick Schenk and James Vanderbilt and also stars Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, and Jackie Earle Haley.

The film takes place in the year 2028 where multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones have been implemented successfully into military and are winning wars around the world. The company decides to bring the technology to local law enforcement agencies.

Like the original movie, Alex Murphy is an ordinary police officer in Detroit. He is critically injured in the line of duty and turned into a cyborg police office by OmniCorp.

"The first thing that I have to say to you is this; forget about the movie ROBOCOP, which is a great movie. Forget about the context in which it was released back in the 80's and the great asset criticism of the media that it made," Jose Padilha said in an interview with Aintitcool.com. "Forget about all of that, just the concept of ROBOCOP theoretically... Robocop is not a superhero, Robocop is what happens to a man when you start changing it with technology so he can follow certain purposes and do certain things for corporations or whatever."
