It was a sad field day in March for fans of CBS' "Person of Interest" when J.J. Abrams announced that this year's fifth season will be the show's last. The crime drama ended in June, with fans reeling over the events that wrapped up and gave emotional closure to Finch (Michael Emerson) and Reese's (Jim Caviezel) relationship. Meanwhile, rumors of a spinoff had circulated when one of the producers tossed that word into his interviews, inspiring fans to clamor for more.
The book of "Person of Interest" has been firmly shut, but that doesn't mean that fans can't speculate on a possible spinoff. Here are a few story ideas that the producers may explore given a chance to create a spinoff from the show.
"Person of Interest" showrunner Jonah Nolan spoke with TV Line in June, saying that there initially was a potential to create a spinoff with Sarah Shahi's character, Sameen Shaw, who began as a recurring character in season 2.
She was promoted to the main cast come season 3, and Nolan admitted that at the time, their focus was on the show. However, he did liken Shaw with Reese in terms of them both being inspired by having a mission to move forward. Could a spinoff explore more of Shaw's back story and her life moving forward after the season finale?
Another spinoff idea would revolve around Finch, who reunited with Grace (Carrie Preston) during the season finale. A potential spinoff can follow the life of Finch now that he is a man free of his past.
Executive producer Greg Plageman told TV Insider that one of the saddest things about the characters of "Person of Interest" is that at some point in their lives, they've had to put distance between themselves and the people they care about the most. A spinoff featuring Finch's second life would explore what he does following his release from the strings of his past.
