We received word in July that of the most cherished games for the unfortunately timed Sega Saturn, NiGHTS, was getting a HD facelift. It's now known that the game will be arriving on the PlayStation Network and XBox Live Arcade in October. Oh, and it'll also include Christmas Nights content.
Originally released in 1996 as part of a Christmas Saturn bundle, Christmas NiGHTS was only available through the bundle, or by purchasing it through magazines. Essentially, it took two levels from the original NiGHTS, and for lack of a better word, "Christmas-fied" them.
A mix of flying and platforming, NiGHTS was one of the first games ever to utilize an analog control stick. The developers' intention was to make the sensation of flight the central gameplay element, achieved through use of the control stick, 3D graphics, and a combination of both 2D and 3D gameplay. The game also featured an open world environment when the two featured characters weren't masquerading as the titular hero.
Besides featuring a complete graphical overhaul, NiGHTS also includes leaderboards, trophies / achievements, and for fans of the old school, an optional "Saturn Mode," which returns the game to its original 1996 graphics.
Launching alongside Sonic Adventure 2, NiGHTS Into Dreams HD will be available for download on PSN October 2, and XBLA October 5.
