Nintendo announced that the sequel to third-person shooter Bayonetta will be a Wii U exclusive. Platinum Games, creator of the original Bayonetta, will once again be developing the video game with Bayonetta 2 currently scheduled for release in March 2013.
Sega the publisher of the original was rumored to have been cancelled Bayonetta 2 as part of a company-wide restructuring, but Nintendo has stepped in and is now publishing Bayonetta 2.
Bayonetta takes place in Vigrid, a fictional city in Europe. The title character is a witch who shape shifts and uses various firearms, along with magical attacks she performs with her own hair. She has been asleep for 500-year sleep and is suffering from amnesia when she wakes up in strange surroundings.
Before Bayonetta's long sabbatical there were two factions of witches preserving the balance between darkness and light in the world. The Umbra Witches, who are followers of darkness, and their counterparts, the Lumen Sages, who are followers of light. Most of the plot is told through flashbacks.
The game play is very similar to Devil May Cry, using both melee and long ranged attacks, complex combo strings, and multiple weapons. Players can defeat enemies with a stylized cinematic-flair.
Ryan Clements of IGN gave the 360 version a 9.5 out of 10 and the PlayStation 3 version an 8.2. He said the PlayStation 3 version was fun game but had issues like excessive slowdown and loading.
The Wii U is scheduled for released on Nov. 18, in North America, Nov. 30 in Europe, Dec. 8, in Japan and during the fourth quarter of 2012 in Australia. The new system will retail for $299.99 for a base model and $349.99 for a deluxe model.
