Guild Wars 2 Players, Be Wary of Scammers

Guild Wars 2 studio is warning players to be especially careful regarding their online identities after learning that scammers have managed to obtain player usernames and passwords.

Said scammers allegedly received their list of names from other sites, and are trying each and every name to login, but as of yet, they've thankfully been unsucessful.

AreaNet is placing blame on players using a single password for numerous ID's, which goes against "Online Security 101," but that many of us have been guilty of at least one time or another. ArenaNet warned players after many were notified after persons unknown attempted to log in to the accounts from China. The studio warns players: "If your current password isn't unique to Guild Wars 2, change it today. Do not under any circumstances use the same password for Guild Wars 2 as you do for your email account. To protect yourself, use a strong, unique password for Guild Wars 2 that you've never used anywhere else!"

This sort of thing is unfortunately nothing new to MMO's, whether the result of phishers, hackers, or some other unsavory group of people. Early in August, a group of hackers managed to breach Blizzard's network. While they didn't manage to get a hold of any financial data, they did manage to grab users' e-mails, answers to security questions, as well as the passwords of players in countries outside of China.

Likewise in June, European League of Legends players were informed that their accounts were hacked.

Remember, if you're playing online, and someone asks you for any personal or account information, just don't give it.
