'Secret Life of Pets' Smashes Box Office Record With $103.2M Opening Ticket Sales

"The Secret Life of Pets" breaks box office records when it premieres with $103.2 million ticket sales over the weekend. The outcome ended the 3-week reign of another animation, "Finding Dory," at the box office.

As announced by comScore, "The Secret Life of Pets" topped both international and domestic weekend box office, with worldwide turnout estimate totaling to $110,972,440. The producers of the animated comedy flick were elated as the results totally exceeded their expectations.

The Illumination Entertainment film is the second animation that earned more than $100 million, following "Finding Dory," which listed a record-breaking $135 million in the opening. Moreover, the movie featuring the voices of Louis C.K., Jenny Slate, Eric Stonestreet, Ellie Kemper, Albert Brooks, Lake Bell, Hannibal Buress, Dana Carvey, Bobby Moynihan and Steve Coogan, already got back the $75 million budget that was spent on its production.

Commenting on the massive success of "The Secret Life of Pets," USA Today quoted comScore senior media analyst, Paul Dergarabedian, as saying, "If any pets were wondering what their owners were doing this weekend, they were seeing this movie."

The family film tells the story of Max, a spoiled terrier canine, who lives a very comfortable life in New York. His life changed when his owner, Katie, brought home Duke, a large, unruly dog that she decided to adopt from the pound. Max got extremely jealous of Duke as Katie pays more attention to him.

The two pets got into trouble when they ventured outside to walk and were attacked by group of fierce alley cats. They ended up in the Animal Control truck but was saved by a rebellious rabbit named Snowball. The bunny believed that Max and Duke were abandoned pets so he brought them to the sewer so they could meet and join his human-hater gang called the "Flushed Pets."

"The Secret Life of Pets" was first shown at the French animation event called the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in June 2016. It was subsequently released in Canada and United States on July 8. The film was directed by Chris Renaud and written by Cinco Paul, Brian Lynch and Ken Daurio.
