The gluttonous green swine of Angry Birds have a bit more in mind than making off with eggs. Evidently, they'll be starring in their own game later this month. Check the teaser video below!
Since the video doesn't offer much to go on, Rovio also provided a press release, saying the gameplay should be fairly different than that of Angry Birds, with "not a slingshot in sight!"
"There's a lot of empathy towards the lovable enemies from the Angry Birds games, and we've been constantly asked: what about the pigs' side of the story?" said Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio. "Bad Piggies gives you the chance to play as the second-most-loved characters in the Angry Birds universe, and explore this rich world through their green eyes."
"We've had a lot of fun creating a totally new and unique gameplay experience," said Petri Järvilehto, EVP Games at Rovio. "There's so much more to these pigs than what is seen in the Angry Birds games, and Bad Piggies is the first glimpse into what's going on in the imaginative and ingenious minds of the pigs."
Bad Piggies will no doubt help expand the Angry Birds empire. According to a recent games industry article, the toy manufacturer for Rovio's line of Angry Birds toys, Commonwealth Toy & Novelty Co., expects to sell a whopping $400 million worth of Angry Birds merchandise this year.
Since it's release by RovioMobile in 2009, the original Angry Birds and all its additions have reached (cumulatively) over one billion downloads. It's now available on everything from Facebook, to mobile phones, nooks, and iPads, and will eventually make a nest on home consoles as well.
Last year, Rovio said it generated $106 million in revenue. About 30% of that came from licensing agreements and sales of merchandise like Commonwealth's plush toy line, as well as red-bird squeeze pillows, board games, and Halloween costumes. A true success story, Commonwealth now receives dozens of licensing offers from app developers each month.
Bad Piggies is launching on iOS, Android and Mac on September 27, with Windows 8 and PC versions coming soon after.
