Although Pixar had a hugely successful launch of "Finding Dory," it plans to focus more on making original films and reduce sequels.
Jim Morris, president of Pixar, stated that as a filmmaker studio, they have to prioritize original content. There will be two more sequels followed by several original films in the next several years.
Entertainment Weekly stated that executives usually want to order a sequel as soon as a new film is launched by Pixar, mainly to maximize profits.
Morris explained that Pixar is dedicated to working with moviemakers to create new and original films.
Although sequels is a fast way of guaranteeing revenue, they are also concerned about loyal fans who may be disappointed with the lowered quality of the follow-up films.
Polygon stated that the company has two more sequels coming up until 2019 - "Toy Story 4" and "The Incredibles II." The sequel to "Cars" will also release in 2017.
There will be two original movies in the next three years and Morris promised that there will not be any sequels for a while.
This means that fans will have to wait for the sequels of their favorite films for at least 10 years, in the same way that "Finding Dory" was launched 13 years after "Finding Nemo."
Morris mentioned that he is particularly fond of "WALL-E," but would not wish to disrupt the perfect start, middle and end of its story.
He said that they generally do not come up with a sequel unless the director of the original film has a concept that they agree on and willing to develop.
Pixar's plan may be a relief for fans who are growing tired of sequels and trilogies. The next new movie from the studio, titled "Coco," is themed after Day of the Dead and is set to launch in 2017. The two originals slated for March and June 2020 remain untitled.
Morris said that the two upcoming originals will be set in unusual but believable worlds that bring them to new directions compared to where they have been in the past.
He added that there are two more films in early development that still do not have projected release dates.
It seems that the company already has a solid schedule of films in the next decade, and will most likely announce the specifics as these draw closer.
More updates and details on Pixar and its string of original movies and sequels are expected soon.
