Peter Molyneux is known for issuing overly exaggerated description of the videogames his studios have under development, but he is now painting an even brighter picture of the game industry.
The game designer spoke about the gaming community at the Unite 2012 conference in Amsterdam this week and said, "The amazing thing about where we are today is that the whole world is becoming gamers."
Molyneux is known for creating god-games like Dungeon Keeper, Populous, and Black & White, among others, as well as creating the role-playing game series Fable. He recently left his position at Microsoft in March and formed an independent studio called 22 Cans.
During his address, Molyneux explained his boredom with other forms entertainment. He urged the gaming industry to further push the boundaries of the medium and said video games are the only entertainment medium that is capable of surprising people.
"I'm bored with movies; I'm bored with TV programs. We're in the industry, the last entertainment industry that really, truly can surprise people," Molyneux said. "We are in the industry where surprise has to be at the center of everything that we do."
Molyneux also clarified why he has left Lionhead Studios and Microsoft, saying he abandon his employment with the corporation to provide his video games with a greater attention to detail.
"For me, having one idea that I and my team utterly, completely, obsessively focus on is the reason that I left," he said.
Molyneux oversaw Microsoft-owned British developers Rare and Lionhead, where he created the Fable series. His new studio is currently working on an iOS game that was originally titled Curiosity, but as of now is untitled.
