‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ News & Updates: Director Roland Emmerich Called Marvel Movies Silly

While promoting "Independence Day: Resurgence" over the weekend, director Roland Emmerich thinks that Marvel superhero movies are silly. With blockbuster movies under his name, he pointed out that most of the heroes in his films are regular Joe's, not some superhuman being wearing a cape or suit.

The Rising Trend Of Superhero Movies

In an interview with The Guardian, Roland Emmerich talked about his upcoming film "Independence Day: Resurgence," a sequel to the blockbuster hit in 1996.

Ever since "Independence Day" hit the theaters 20 years ago, it paved the way for big movies with ground-breaking special effects to follow suit.

However, he denied that his films are anything like the Marvel superhero movies that flock the theaters now.

He pointed out the difference between his films ("Stargate," "Independence Day," "Godzilla" and White House Down) and the Marvel blockbuster films: the hero is always the unlikely Joe in his films while Marvel movies always have people in funny suits or capes.

But Emmerich pointed out that he grew up in Germany where superheroes were not a trend. That might explain why he finds the superhero movies kind of silly.

So this goes to show that not everyone likes a superhero.

'Independence Day: Resurgence' Details

After two decades since 1996's "Independence Day," Roland Emmerich comes back at his destructive best. Instead of a sequel, "Independence Day: Resurgence" continues the story of the first movie.

According to CNET, the story takes off after humans defeated the invading aliens. The world has done their best to prepare for another alien invasion. They have training and advanced technology to fend off the extraterrestrial beings. Or so they thought.

Emmerich makes the movie a big-screen spectacle, with the mother ship coming back to Earth for vengeance. It sucks up the whole Asia and dumps it on Europe. That's how massive destruction is going to be in "Independence Day: Resurgence."

Returning original casts include Jeff Goldblum, Brett Spiner and Judd Hirsch. "Independence Day: Resurgence" will hit the theaters on Thursday, June 23. Check out the movie trailer below.
