Personally I felt that the Assassin's Creed series was becoming a bit complacent as they finished up the trilogy of Ezio Auditore da Firenze. While the storyline was compelling, I felt the European backdrop needed to be updated.
And Ubisoft is definitely doing that with Assassin's Creed III's setting of the wild and exciting American frontier. The game already prompts memories of an epic film like Michael Mann's "The Last of the Mohicans."
The game's hero is also reminiscent of Mohican's main character Nathaniel Hawkeye; in fact the two characters exist around the same era in time. So what do we know about Assassin's Creed III's protagonist Connor?
Well according to some of the game information released by Ubisoft, Connor was born to a British father and Mohawk mother. His true name is Ratonhnhaké:ton and he was raised by his mother's Mohawk tribe.
Historically, the Mohawk people were the indigenous people of North America originally from the Mohawk Valley in upstate New York. Their territory ranged to present-day southern Quebec and eastern Ontario.
The Mohawk people were known as the "Keepers of the Eastern Door." They guarded the Iroquois Confederation against invasion of other tribes from the New England and lower New York areas.
In the 1770s, there were just over two million people living in the thirteen American colonies. According to the game's story it is around this time that the fictional Kenway came into conflict with the British and his village was burnt down. He joined the Assassin's order and adopted the name Connor in order to move around colonial communities unnoticed.
Much like the character of Hawkeye, Kenway finds himself caught in the middle of war. It has been Five years since he joined the order and the American Revolutionary War has erupted. Connor sides with the leaders of the American rebellion, including famed historical figures George Washington and Benjamin Franklin.
He shares many ideals with the American rebels and their fight against tyranny. Connor will also meet other notable figures, such as Charles Lee, Paul Revere, Israel Putnam and Samuel Adams. With the involvement of these historical figures, I can only imagine some of the missions that Connor will undertake.
We may even get to take part in the Boston Massacre and the BostonTea Party. We also know that during the war, Connor becomes captain of a Continental warship and he sails the Eastern Seaboard and Caribbean Sea.
The rest of Connor's story will be told when Assassin's Creed III releases on Oct. 30 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The Wii U version's release has not been given a release date yet.
