'Seveneves' Sci-Fi Film Adaptation Gets Apollo 13's Ron Howard On Board, What We Know So Far

The “Seveneves” sci-fi movie is currently being arranged. Director Ron Howard will most likely work with writer Bill Broyles again on the Skydance film.

Howard and Broyles previously worked on the space film “Apollo 13.” Howard is also set to serve as producer together with his partner at Imagine Entertainment, Brian Grazer, who previously produced “Apollo 13.” Other “Seveneves” producers include Erica Huggins of Imagine Entertainment and David Ellison and Dana Goldberg of Skydance. Howard and Grazer are both represented by CAA. Broyles is represented by Management 360.

ScreenRant revealed that “Apollo 13” launched in 1995. The film starred Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton, who played the astronauts of the aborted 1970 lunar mission. Howard directed the film, based on the screenplay written by Broyles and Al Reinert. The movie turned out to be a huge success, having been nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning Best Film Editing and Best Sound, and raking in over $355 million at the world box office. “Seveneves” would reunite the director and writer to work on the space-themed project.

According to Variety, the “Seveneves” movie is an adaptation of the novel of the same title by Neal Stephenson. The plot focuses on a catastrophic event that caused the Earth to self-destruct in the near future. As a result, countries had to work together on a grand plan to transfer humans in outer space to survive. After 5000 years, the descendants of those who successfully left the planet, comprised of 3 billion people and seven races, return to thesame world that their forefathers left behind, significantly ravaged by time and cataclysm.

Howard is an experienced director and has worked on several book-to-film adaptations in the past. Book author Stephenson shared on his website that he attempted to pitch the concept to various groups for several years with little success. Now that Stephenson’s ideas have been properly slated in the “Seveneves” novel, Howard has more source material and is expected to provide a great story and visuals, at the same time maintaining the elements that the author envisioned.

Given Howard and Broyles’ proven expertise in “Apollo 13,” as well as the producers’ experience in sci-fi movies, “Seveneves” is expected to provide an entertaining and rich visual experience to viewers soon. Producer David Ellison served on “Star Trek: Into Darkness” before, Huggins helped produce “Flightplan,” while Goldberg previously worked on “I Am Legend.”

The official launch date and more details about “Seveneves” are expected to be announced soon.
