“Sherlock” Season 4 is slowly shaping up to be a humdinger following the revelation of the season villain who will be Toby Jones. Jones is no stranger to playing the evil card, having done so in the big screen with “Captain America: The Winter Soldier."
Jones portrayed the role of that evil Hydra chemist “Dr. Zola” and everyone knows how that turned out. With a proven villain in the mix, “Sherlock” Season 4 should be something to look forward to.
Jones will play the part of “Culverton Smith”, a classic Holmes’ villain. For those who are not familiar with the Sherlock Holmes origins, Smith appeared on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Adventures of the Dying Detective” back in 1913.
A synopsis of that from Den of Geek bares that Smith had murdered his nephew and eventually tries to kill Sherlock as well through a spring-loaded box that could release an infectious disease. Sherlock pulled a fast one by playing possum, allowing Smith to confess.
While that was an old storyline, it will be interesting now on how producers will be able to depict that on the modern day version via BBC. That part where Sherlock fooled Smith will likely be customized a bit with Benedict Cumberbatch of course reprising his role of “Sherlock."
"We're thrilled to welcome one of our finest actors to the Sherlock family. I know Toby will embrace the part with true relish!" said “Sherlock co-showrunner Steven Moffat.
The twist is expected to be set during “Dr. Watson’s” (Martin Freeman) second year of marriage which hints that “Mary Watson” (Amanda Abbington) will still be alive by the second episode of “Sherlock” Season 4.
With a tested veteran actor on board, “Sherlock” Season 4 will certainly be something to look forward to. "Sherlock" Season 4 is set to return by January, 2017.
