Microsoft Switches Name from 'Metro' to 'Modern UI'?

Last week, Microsoft informed Windows developers against using the word "Metro" for their tiled interface. The company also asked its developers to use "New User Interface" instead of "Metro" until the name was replaced by another. References were switched to "Windows 8 applications" from "Metro-style applications" and "Metro user interface" was switched to "Windows 8 user interface."

Nevertheless, it has been reported that employees at Microsoft have preferred to use the name "Modern UI Style" for its new Windows 8 user interface and Windows 8 apps as "Modern UI." The company, previously used names like modern, immerse, fast, and fluid to Windows 8 OS but commonly it was all known as Metro.

The software giant was supposed to choose a name replacement last week but has not officially announced the replacement for Metro.

Microsoft stopped using "Metro" due to a potential trademark dispute that would arise from German retailer, Metro AG. Metro AG did not comment on the issue, while a Microsoft spokesperson said, "We have used Metro style as a code name during the product development cycle across many of our product lines. As we get closer to launch and transition from industry dialog to a broad consumer dialog we will use our commercial names."
