Minecraft just keeps chugging along. According to the Swedish news site IT24, the Xbox 360 version is selling at a rate of 17,000 copies a day. Translate that into financial terms, and Minecraft is a virtual cash cow, garnering $340,000 every 24 hours.
As a result, Minecraft's company Mojang is set to almost double its profits this year, on track to take in over $17 million this year, as opposed to last year's almost $9 million.
Since the game debuted on XBLA in early May, Minecraft has sold more than 3 million copies, and was reported as profitable within an hour of being made available, selling 400,000 in the first 24 hours. It then went on to hit 1 million sales 4 days later.
An open ended sandbox (literally) style game available for less than $30, it's not hard to see why so many people have latched onto the Minecraft phenomenon, and further updates to the XBLA version should help keep it along.
It's own convention, MineCon, will take place at Disney Paris in November 24 and 25. To date, Minecraft has over 35 million registered users, according to their site. Similar to Angry Birds, Minecraft also has a slew of merchandise including shirts, scarves, magnets, sticky pads, and recently, even Legos. The team behind Minecraft, Mojang, is even open to the idea of a movie or television show.
